Beauty trend: Berrylicious lips

Berry lips

Berry lips are a major beauty trend right now. But that doesn’t mean you should just slap on the first tube of dark lipstick you see. You need to carefully select your berry of choice. Are you a blackberry, raspberry, boysenberry—what’s your jam? Well, it all depends on your skin tone.

Celebs such Emma Watson, Rihanna, Megan Fox, Beyoncé and Lily Collins have all rocked the trend but they all have very different skin tones and therefore their berry selection varies. So how do you know what berry lipstick shade is right for you? Let’s find out!

Get the look

This look is all about the lips so try to keep your eye makeup natural. Alongside the lippie, a good foundation and a sweep of mascara is all that you will really need.

The perfect mix: skin tone + berries

Fair skin

Lily Collins

Best shades: deep plum, berry and wine reds with a blue undertone.

Fair skin can pull off purple based red lippy without looking too washed out, wearing a pinkish red lippy is the best hue for this kind of pale complexion and will still look beautiful.

Top tip: If you have pale skin, go for a berry lipstick that has a sheer wash of colour, as lipsticks with a thicker and opaque finish will look too heavy for your skin tone.

List of berry lipsticks for fair skin:

  •  L’Oréal Paris Infallible Lipstick ‘Enduring Berry’
  • Rimmel London Lasting Finish Lipstick ‘Cutting Edge’
  • NYX Cosmetics Matte Lipstick in ‘Merlot’

Medium/olive skin

Jessica Alba

Best shades: rich, deep brown-reds and dark berry shades. Avoid pink undertones.

Knowing what berry hue suit you best will not only work well with your skin tone, but will also brighten your smile.  It is a blessing if you belong to the medium/olive skin category as you cannot go wrong with the wide range of berry lip colours and shades.

List of berry lipsticks for medium skin:

  • Rimmel London Moisture Renew Lipstick in Dark Nights Water-Loops
  • Estee Lauder Pure Colour High Intensity Lip Lacquer in Electric Wine
  • Models Prefer Lipstick in ‘Picture Perfect’

Top tip: Applying a cool/’blue’ based berry lipstick can also have a bonus effect of making your teeth look whiter.

Dark skin

Kerry Washington

Best shades: Mahogany, deep plums and wine reds. Plus, any shade of brown.

Bright berry hues are the way to go as they pop beautifully against deep, rich skin tones. Berry colours with an underlying undertone of magenta, violet or tangerine will work well on your lips. Dark red and chocolate-brown undertones will also complement this kind of skin tone.

List of berry lipsticks for medium skin:

  • Mac Satin Lipstick in ‘Film Noir’
  • Lancome Rouge In Love Lipstick in ‘292N Ches Prune’
  • Bobbi Brown Lipstick in ‘Berry’

Top tip: Darker complexions can handle thick, opaque finishes to berry lipsticks, so feel free to go all on dark, rich tones.

Finishing the look

To help your lippie stay in place all day, use a lip primer – this will help to prevent feathering. A lip liner is also a great tool for getting that Cupid’s bow defined.

Don’t forget to add a little bit of colour to your cheeks through the use of bronzer or blusher to balance out the high contrast of colour on your lips. Berry lips also work wonders with dark coloured nail polish.

And that’s how you can achieve berry-nice looking lips! If you love reading about all things beauty and makeup then a career in Beauty Therapy may be perfect for you.
