You’ve spent a fair amount of time applying your makeup in the morning, only to come home later in the day and see raccoon eyes and foundation marks or dried out skin and spots appearing again. It’s frustrating however, there are some really easy and simple tricks to get more from your makeup. With just a few quick changes to your makeup routine, you will find your makeup and your look, lasting much longer. From foundation to mascara, we assess the products that will give you the ultimate wear. Here are our top 10 tricks for how to make your makeup last all day.
Polish those pores because exfoliation is key to prepping your skin for makeup application – the smoother the surface, the more evenly products will apply and therefore the longer the makeup lasts. Aim to exfoliate twice a week to wash away the dead skin cells.
Use a good quality moisturiser
Have you ever noticed that your makeup starts to collect into fine lines and creases become apparent by mid-morning? This is due to your hydration levels and sebum production. As these two factors fluctuate throughout the day, it causes your skin to look uneven. To combat this, look for moisturisers that respond to ‘over-day ageing’ as this style of moisturiser will smooth and firm skin while you wear it.
It’s a crime not to prime.
As our Ivy Beauties will tell you it’s a crime not to prime. Primer ‘seals in’ your moisturiser and provides a smooth, even surface for makeup. Not only this, it keeps your makeup from being absorbed, giving it greater staying power.
Building up your makeup products in light layers will make it last way longer than applying one heavy layer, and it always looks more natural too. This rule applies to your base, eye makeup and lipstick.
Oil-free formulas stay put for longer as they don’t contain the ingredients that can make makeup slide off your face. However, if your skin is on the dry side, you’ll need to use a hydrating formula. To keep your foundation in place, first let your moisturiser absorb into your skin (leave for 5 minutes) before applying your foundation. Lock in your foundation in with translucent powder which helps to soak up the oils that will accelerate fading.
For an enduring daytime look, apply eyeshadow base or a concealer that doesn’t feel oily, then apply your powder shadow. Priming your eyelids will help to eyeshadow powder to adhere. Keep in mind this trick won’t work if you’re using a cream shadow.
Keep eyeliner from finding a new home under your eyes by using liquid and gel liners as they last longer than pencil. If you simply can’t part with your beloved pencil, trace over it with a matching eye shadow as the powder helps to set the pencil.
Again, it’s all about the formula. Pick a gel, liquid, or cream cheek stain as they’re all highly pigmented, which is why they last longer. If you prefer powder blush, try a slightly brighter shade than what you think you should use as it will fade throughout the day. Whatever formula you choose, there’s an easy application trick you should know about: sweep powder on in an X over the apple of each cheek. This will punch up your pigment load (allowing a little extra for fading) and guarantee that the strongest concentration of colour is in the perfect place.
This one shouldn’t be a surprise to most beauty lovers – waterproof formulas are the way to go if you’re looking for long wear. Any kind of moisture, whether its humidity, tears or sweat, makes non-waterproof mascara slide right off.
Make your lipstick last throughout the day and into the night by applying it properly and with care. Start by outlining your lip with a pencil in a tone similar to your lipstick. The pencil helps anchor the colour on top. Next, apply the lipstick with a brush, this presses the pigment deeper into your lips than the tube or a finger does. A brush will also allow you to apply several thin layers (another key to long wear). Check out the tutorial video here.
