Writing things down, on paper or on-screen, is the best way to make sure you remember important information and tasks. There are plenty of techniques and tools to help you improve your memory. Here are our top 5 study hacks to help you recall your course material.

  1. Go for a walk before tackling your studies

Exercise can boost your memory and brain power. Research conducted by Dr. Chuck Hillman of the University of Illinois provides evidence that about 20 minutes exercise before your studies can improve performance.

  1. Speak out loud instead of simply reading

Although this may make you look a little crazy, give it a go! You will be surprised how much more you can remember when you’ve said it out loud.

  1. Draw diagrams and mind maps

Drawing diagrams and mind maps will help you to visualise information which would be hard to describe. This is a great technique for visual learners! Mind maps are also an easy way to connect ideas by creating a visual overview of different connections.

  1. Create flashcards

Quickly test your knowledge of key concepts, definitions, quotes and formulas with flashcards. Flashcards take a little while to make, but the effort of writing things down also helps memory.

Flashcards are useful because you:

  • Can carry them around with you
  • Are likely to use them more often
  • Improve memory through regular, short reviews of information

  1. Teach someone else

Teaching the information you have learned to someone else is one of the best ways to memorise and recall course material. If you don’t have a willing listener like a parent or a friend, you can teach the wall or even a furry friend!
